Established in 1959, the New Westminster Judo Club has been active for over 65 years as part of the təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre (formerly Centennial Community Center).

The təməsew̓txʷ is a hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ word meaning "sea otter house". The word is a combination of "təməs" (sea otter) and "ew̓txʷ" (house). The təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre in New Westminster, BC was named təməsew̓txʷ by a Naming Advisory Panel of local First Nations and urban Indigenous representatives to reflect the playful and joyous nature of the sea otter.

With our club being in the "sea otter house", we then became the fighting sea otters! And, over the years, we have had the chance and privilege of sharing Judo as both a recreational and competitive sport to anyone that entered the 'sea otter house' and our dojo within it.

Our club offers Judo not only as an art or sport, but also as a discipline, a fitness program and a means of self-defense.  Judo is a well-rounded activity that teaches physical coordination, flexibility and body control in a fun and relaxed environment. Judo is a highly effective way to improve overall fitness and develop a resilient physique. Participating in Judo also builds self-confidence, concentration, respect and leadership. It is great for kids, adults, and is for people of all physical and mental abilities, with adaptations for people with disabilities and the ability to work with opponents of different sizes and strengths.
